Week of 3.11.19

Highlights for the Weeks of 3/11/2019
in Mrs. Bell's Classroom

Spelling -  Unit 22 - Adjectives
An adjective is a word that describes a noun. This week's lesson consists of a collection of adjectives and a review of similes and metaphors. The final TEST is scheduled for Friday, 3/15.

Reading- Unit 2 - "Journeys" - The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

As our novel study continues, students will have another opportunity to complete written responses to the text. The expectation is that they will provide text evidence to support their response, and will also be able to interpret and extend that text proof. We have practiced this skill several times as a class, and now it is time for them to "show what they know". This week they will respond to a prompt from chapter 3. We will also read the poem Some People which is a paired text for the novel.

Below are some photos of students using whiteboards to respond to questions about relative adverbs in class. I like using this strategy because it gives me instant feedback about student understanding of the topic...plus, it's fun!

Social Studies - The Ojibwa
The Just Look Book projects are due on 3/13. Students will present that day. We will also study the Native Americans of the Midwest, The Ojibwa. Students will learn about how the Ojibwa of the past used their natural resources to survive and how the Ojibwa of the present keep their traditions and culture alive.

Science - Energy Conversions
This week's focus will be on how to write a design argument. Students will be writing an argument related to the wind turbine that they built.

Speaking of wind turbines...below are some videos of student engineers testing the design of their wind turbines after they made improvements based on peer reviews. It was such a pleasure to witness their excitement over their successes!

Mrs. Bell's Math Class - Unit 5 - Multiplying & Dividing Fractions
We will continue to focus on fraction division. The Unit 5 TEST is scheduled for 3/14.

FYI...
3/11 - Field Trip to the Museum of Science & Industry
3/14 - Erin's Law Presentation
3/25 - Spring Break begins

The field trip to the Museum of Science & industry is scheduled for Monday, 3/11. Your child will need a completely disposable lunch for that day.

Our morning meetings are a chance for students to connect and to work on social skills. In these photos, they are in small groups using fortune tellers as a way to discuss topics and problem solve with their peers.
