Week of 4/28/08 - 5/2/08


HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF 4/28/08 – 5/2/08

SPELLING – Lesson 29 – Compound Words & Contractions
The final test will be fifteen words from this week's lesson and five words from last week's lesson. Checklist work is due on Friday, 5/2.

READING
Our new unit is a study of the novel, Night of the Twisters. This book is the story of how a family is affected when a series of tornadoes comes throught their town. It also ties in perfectly with our weather unit in science. We will be focusing on revisiting the reading comprehension skills that we have studied all year, such as summarizing, questioning, connecting and predicting, by participating in book clubs during this unit.

“Bite into a Good Book” Program
The deadline for this reaching goals is May 23rd. Students must ALWAYS have a silent reading book with them at school!



LANGUAGE ARTS
Pronouns is our new unit. We will be looking at the difference between subject and object pronouns this week.

SOCIAL STUDIES
The Chapter 11 TEST will be on Tuesday, 4/29. Students were given a 4X6 notecard for writing notes that they will be allowed to use for the test. We will begin Chapter 12 at the end of the week.

SCIENCE - Weather
The barometer and hot/cold air will be our focus this week.


MATH - Mrs. Bell's Class
We will be wrapping up Chapter 6 with a look at misleading graphs, and stem and leaf plots. The Chapter 6 TEST will be on Thursday, 5/1.


FYI
I'd like to say a huge "THANK YOU" to everyone who sent in donations for our Chinese cooking day. The fried rice and tea were delicious, thanks to the hard work and cooperation of our student chefs. I think that some students even tried a new vegetable or two! We also enjoyed challenging ourselves to eat with chopsticks! What a fun morning!

Weed of 4/21/08 - 4/25/08

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF 4/21/08 - 4/25/08

SPELLING – Lesson 28 - “Greek Combining Forms”

For the rest of the year, our final test format which will consist of 15 words from the current lesson and 5 words from the previous lesson. Checklist work is due on Friday, 4/25.

READING
We are approaching the end of our unit on China. The final copies of the China brochure are due on Thursday, 4/24. We will be making and eating fried rice on that day to celebrate the end of the unit. We will also share a TFK this week. The novel, Night of the Twisters will be the focus of our next unit in reading.


"Bite into a Good Book" Program
Students must have a silent reading book with them at all times!

LANGUAGE ARTS
The adjectives TEST will be given on Friday, April 25th. Our next chapter will be pronouns!

SOCIAL STUDIES
Our study of chapter 11 will continue with a look at the travels of Lewis and Clark.



SCIENCE - Weather
Air pressure and barometers will be our topics this week.

MATH - Mrs. Bell's Class
Frequency tables, ordered pairs and line graphs will be our topics this week. There will be no math on Thursday, 4/24 due to early dismissal.

FYI
It was wonderful to see so many families at our open house this week! The children were proud to share their work with you!

We have early dismissal on Thursday, 4/24. Students will be dismissed at 11:00.

Week of 4/14/08 - 4/18/08


HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF 4/14/08 - 4/18/08

SPELLING – Lesson 26 - Review
The final test format will consist of 15 words from the current lesson and 5 words from the previous lesson. Checklist work is due Friday, 4/18.


READING
There will be an invasion of dragons in our classroom as we take a look at the significance of the dragon to the Chinese people, and create our own personal dragons! Students will begin working on the final copies of their China brochures on Thursday, 4/17.

Students must ALWAYS have a silent reading book with them at school!


LANGUAGE ARTS
We will continue our study of adjectives with a look at comparing with adjectives and proper usage of the words "good" and "bad".


SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be looking at lessons 1 & 2 of Chapter 11 this week. These lessons focus on George Washington's presidency and the leadership of Thomas Jefferson.



SCIENCE
The final quiz in the "You & Your Body" unit will be on Monday, 4/14. The quiz will cover respiration, skin and teeth. Students will be allowed to use their books for the quiz. On Tuesday, we will begin our new science unit...Weather!


MATH - Mrs. Bell's Class
Organizing data is the topic for our new chapter in math - Chapter 6. This week students will study how to make a table and how additional data and outliers affect reporting. We will also review the concepts of range, mean, median and mode. There will be a QUIZ on lessons 1-3 on Thursday, 4/17.


FYI
Please plan on attending our Prairieview Open House on Thursday, 4/17 from 6:45 - 8:30. PTO is sponsoring a book fair in the gym, and our classroom will be open. The children are looking forward to sharing all of their fabulous work with you!


The theme for Friday's spirit day is Rock and Roll! Wear a t-shirt from your favorite rock band on 4/18.

Week of 4/7/08 - 4/11/08


HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF 4/7/08 - 4/11/08

SPELLING
Lesson 25 – Words with Silent Letters. Beginning this week, our final test will no longer contain “Words to Know”. The test will consist of 15 words from the current lesson and 5 words from the previous lesson. Checklist work is due on Friday, 4/11.
READING
We will continue our exploration of China. Students will be taking notes on China's economy and culture for their brochure project. The due date for this project has not yet been determined. We will also learn the significance of the lantern to the Chinese people, and create our own lanterns using watercolors and the Chinese letters for our own names.

“Bite into a Good Book” Program
Students must complete one book talk per trimester. Has your child signed up for his/hers?

LANGUAGE ARTS
We have finished verbs and will be moving on to adjectives. We will begin with an introduction to the unit, practice in writing with adjectives, and a look at articles and demonstratives.


SOCIAL STUDIES
We will finish Chapter 10 this week as students create their own "Important Book" and prepare for the chapter TEST which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, 4/10.

SCIENCE - "You and Your Body"
The User's Manual "mini-projects" are due on Tuesday, 4/8. Students will not be given more time in class to complete this project. This week's focus will be skin and teeth!

MATH - Mrs. Bell's Class

The end of fractions is near! We will finish chapter 5 by studying renaming for subtraction of fractions, and solving fraction equations with addition and subtraction. The chapter 5 TEST is scheduled for Thursday, 4/10.


FYI
Art folder #20 is due on Tuesday, 4/8.

The PV open house and book fair is scheduled for Thursday, 4/17. Classrooms will be open. Be sure to mark your calendar!
