Reading

As we wrap up reading class for the 2010-11 school year, we will review all of the reading strategies we have covered. Friday, June 3rd will be our last day of reading.

Mrs. Bell's Math Class

Addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators the addition and subtraction of mixed numbers will be the two last lessons of the year. On Friday we will play a challenge game that will test students' knowledge of all of the topics that we have studied this year!

Week of 5/23/11 - 5/27/11

English - Pronouns

Students will be introduced to our new unit, which is Pronouns. The first two topics include, "What is a Pronoun?" & Subject Pronouns. Ask your child to tell you about our new Schoolhouse Rock friend, Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla!

Social Studies - The West
We're moving on to our last region, The West. This week we will study the geography of the region, primarily the mountain ranges. Students will also create a map of the region, and complete the United States map that they have been working on since the beginning of the year.

Science - Rocks & Minerals
What are the properties of minerals? This is the question that we will be investigating this week. Students will participate in hands on activities to explore the characteristics of different minerals. They will also study the three types of rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary & Metamorphic. An open note/book QUIZ on chapter 7, lesson 1 is scheduled for Friday, 5/27.

Spelling - Final /er/, /l/ & /el/

This week's final test will be on Friday, 5/27. The spelling homework packet will also be collected on that day. This will be the LAST spelling lesson of the year !!!

Reading
This week, in addition to reviewing all reading strategies, students will be focusing on identifying the elements of fantasy and realism. Students will learn that fantasy involves events that could not happen in real life, and that realism involves events that could happen or that have happened in the past.

Mrs. Bell's Math Class
Students will be taking a QUIZ on lessons 1 & 3 of chapter 11 on Monday, 5/23. These two lessons cover division with remainders, and 2-digit by 1-digit division. Fractions (Chapter 15) is the next concept that we will study. Reading and writing fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing & ordering fractions, and reading and writing mixed numbers will be our focus. There will be another QUIZ on lessons 1-3 of chapter 15 on Thursday, 5/26.

English - Adverbs & Prepositions
We will finish this chapter by taking a look at prepositions and prepositional phrases. The TEST on this unit is scheduled for Friday, 5/20.

Social Studies - The Navajo
Students will study the culture and traditions of the Navajo, the Native Americans who lived in the Southwest.

Science- Simple Machines / Rocks & Minerals
Students will take the chapter 17 TEST on Tuesday, 5/17. After reading a Time for Kids about the Space Shuttle program, we will move on to our next unit, Rocks & Minerals.

Spelling - Review
This week's spelling lesson is a review list that consists of 30 words. The final test on Friday, 5/20, will have 20 words from the list. The spelling homework packet will be collected on 5/20.

Reading
This week we will focus on the reading target skill of comparing and contrasting. Comparing means showing similarities. Contrasting means showing differences. By comparing and contrasting one thing with another, readers can remember more of the information.

Mrs. Bell's Math Class
The TEST on chapter 9 is scheduled for Wednesday, 5/18. We will begin our next unit, division, at the end of the week.

Don't forget to sign up for the 2 mile Walk Day on Tuesday, May 24th at Prairieview School. All proceeds from the event will go to the American Red Cross to help the victims of the earthquake in Japan. There will also be a raffle to help raise money for the cause, and any donations would be appreciated. (gift cards, sport items, games, services, small goodies). English - Adverbs & Prepositions

This week we will take a look at using negatives and how to use prepositions. Look for the Adverbs and Preposition test to be scheduled for the week of 5/16.

Social Studies - The Southwest
Students will be taking the chapter 10 TEST on Wednesday, 5/11. They should review their notes, workbook pages & the text to prepare for the test.

Science - Simple Machines

Students will be taking an open note/book QUIZ on lesson 2 of chapter 17 on Monday, 5/9. We will finish the chapter with a look at inclined planes and screws.

Spelling
Due to the short week (we will only have three days of reading because of testing and early dismissal), we will not have spelling this week.

Reading
Our focus this week is on the reading strategy of monitor/clarify. Students should monitor how well they understand a story. If they don't understand something, they can reread or read ahead for help.

Mrs. Bell's Math Class

We are beginning a new chapter this week that will focus on multiplying by 1 digit numbers. The topics that we will cover include multiplication patterns, strategies for estimating products, multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers, multiplying 3 & 4 digit numbers & money, and multiplying with zeroes! Knowledge of math facts will be of the utmost importance during this chapter!

May 13 - Early Dismissal - PV Students dismissed at 11:00

Project Challenge will be selling "Lifesaving Grams" through may 25th. They are raising money to help the earthquake victims in Japan. The forms for the "grams" may be printed from a link on the District 66 website.
