Week of 5/24/10 - 5/28/10

Highlights for the Week of 5/24/10 - 5/28/10 in Mrs. Bell's Classroom!

Spelling - Lesson 34 - Silent "g" & "h"
The final test for lesson 34 will be on Friday, 5/28. Workbook pages, the master and checklist work are due on 5/27.

Reading - Flying Solo
We will finish the year continuing to practice the reading strategies that we have studied and mastered in fifth grade. We are loving the book Flying Solo! Students are independenly reading the novel and participating in daily group meetings to engage in activities that allow them to practice predicting, summarizing and inferring.

"Bite into a Good Book" - Independent Reading Program
Congratulations to all of students who reached their third trimester reading goal! The reading celebration will be during lunch and recess on Wednesday, 5/26. I will be providing pizza, and students should bring their own drinks. Be sure to return the signed movie permission slip before that day!

English - Adverbs
Adverbs modify verbs, or tell how, when or where something happens. This week we will look at comparing with adverbs, using negatives, and differences between adverbs and adjectives. Ask your child to explain to you the proper use of the words "good" & "well"!

Social Studies - The Young United States
The Lewis & Clark Expedition & the War of 1812 will be our topics in social studies this week. The War of 1812 is famous for a particular reason. Ask your child if he/she can tell you what that reason is!

Science - Earth's Moon & Beyond
Our focus in science this week will be on the inner and outer planets in our solar system, and space exploration.

Math - Mrs. Bell's Math Class
Multiplication and division of integers will be our final concepts this year. On Wednesday, students will take an "inventory" test that covers all of the concepts that we have studied in 5th grade. They took the identical test the first week of school. This test is not for a grade, but will be used to see how far we've come over the past 9 months. Thursday is the last day of math.

FYI...

The end of the year celebration for fifth grade only will be the afternoon of 5/27. PTO has planned a very special afternoon for our outgoing class of 2010!
