Reading - Poetry

We will continue to focus on reinforcing the reading strategies we have studied this year by studying poetry this week. We will analyze the components of poetry as we compare and contrast the characteristics of poetry and prose. Students will also be assigned a poem that they will read aloud to the class on 5/17. They must practice reading their poem aloud daily.

"Bite into a Good Book" - Independent Reading Program

The DEADLINE for reading contract is 5/14. Students must give one book talk & write a "Getting to the Core" of the book for each book read by then.

English - Verbs

Contractions with "not" and irregular verbs will be our focus this week. The verbs "quest" is tentatively scheduled for the week of 5/17.

Social Studies - The Young United States

The first lesson in chapter 11 focus on the "young" United States under the leadership of George Washington. We will be taking notes on this topic before moving on to the expansion of U.S. borders under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson.

Science - Earth's Moon & Beyond

This week's topics include the phases of the moon & eclipses.

Math - Integers

We will begin our week by completing an activity on simple interest that extends the unit on percents that we just completed. Next, we will move on to the study of integers. I can't wait to introduce working with negative numbers to our "outside of the box" thinkers!

FYI...

All this week Prairieview is collecting gym shoes in any shape and all other shoes that still have some life in them. We want to help cut down on the amount going into landfills. The shoes will be either donated to places that help people or will be sent to Nike's recycling center where they recycle gym shoes into a variety of objects including floor mats. Please tie the shoes together or put them in plastic grocery bags so that they do not become separated. Thank you for your support. At Prairieview School – Character Counts!

District 66 has EARLY DISMISSAL on Friday, May 14th. Students will be dismissed at 11:00

Fifth grade has been invited to attend a dress rehearsal for the musical, Oklahoma which is being presented at LV next weekend. We are looking forward to seeing our talented middle school students perform.

Happy Mother's Day!

Mrs. Karen Bell
