Week of 5/17/10 - 5/21/10

Highlights for the Week of 5/17/10 - 5/21/10 in Mrs. Bell's Classroom

Spelling - Lesson 33 - The letter "y" in words
The final test for this lesson is scheduled for Friday, 5/21. Workbook pages, Master 33B & Checklist work will be collected on 5/20.

Reading - Flying Solo
We will continue to review our reading strategies by taking the look at the novel, Flying Solo. This novel is the story of what happens in a sixth grade classroom when the teacher is sick, and the "sub" never shows up. In the early part of the novel, we will be focusing in particular on predicting and making inferences based on character traits.

"Bite into a Good Book" - Independent Reading Program
The reading celebration will take place the week of 5/24. Stay tuned for an exact date!

English - Verbs
We will be finishing this unit with a look at the use of the words teach, learn, sit & set. Students will have the QUEST (mini-test) on lessons 9-15 of this chapter on Wednesday, 5/19.

Social Studies - The Young United States
The presidency of Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase are the topics for the week. Ask your child about our new Schoolhouse Rock song, "Elbow Room".

Science - Earth's Moon & Beyond
The open book/note ASSESSMENT for chapter 13, lesson 2 is scheduled for Monday, 5/17. Then it's to "infinity & beyond" with a look at the planets in our solar system.

Math - Mrs. Bell's Math Class
We've had great discussions as we learned about the properties of integers. The midchapter QUIZ for chapter 9 is scheduled for Tuesday, 5/18. Later in the week we will focus on addition & subtraction of integers.

FYI...
The Lakeview Open House for fifth grade parents is Monday, 5/17 at 6:30. This is a great opportunity to see the building, and to meet the teachers and administrators at Lakeview. Fifth grade students will be taking their own trip to Lakeview next week that will introduce them to life in junior high.
