Highlights for the Week of 4/16/12 in Mrs. Bell & Miss Johnston's Classroom
Spelling - Review
This week's spelling list will be a review of the different words we have learned so far in our unit. The final test on this lesson will be given on Friday, 4/20. The workbook pages OR challenge work will also be collected that day.
Reading - I Can Use Reading Strategies While Reading
We will continue using the novel, Charlotte's Web to practice and review our reading strategies. This week, students will complete their final discussion sheets and have Book Club meetings during class. Homework assignments this week will include reading 3-4 chapters & filling in the Book Club discussion sheets. Although this may appear to be a lengthy assignment, please be aware that students will be given time in class (approximately one and one-half hours) per assignment. Students will be expected to manage their time wisely. This week, we will also be doing a Reader's Theater of the novel Charlotte's Web as a finishing project. Students will have the opportunity to create costumes that fit their role as well as performing for another class.
English- Verbs
This week the students will be completing a study guide that reviews our unit on Verbs. The final TEST on Verbs will be on Wednesday, 4/18. This week the students will also be introduced to a writing project that incorporates the present, past, and future tenses of verbs.

Our journey across the U.S. has brought us to our final region, The West. This week the students will learn about the resources of this region. The final TEST on this chapter is scheduled for Friday, 4/20. A study guide will be sent home and a review session will be held in class to help prepare the students for the test.
Science - "Why is the Force of Gravity Important?"
Our new unit focuses on the force of gravity in our world. We will study how gravity and friction work, and the difference between weight and mass. There will be an open note/book QUIZ on chapter 16/lesson 3 in science on Thursday, 4/26.
Mrs. Bell & Miss Johnston's Math Class - Fractions
This week we will be starting Chapter 16, Adding and Subtracting Fractions & Mixed Numbers.
We will learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers that have like denominators. A quiz will follow these lessons to monitor student learning and understanding.
