Highlights for the Week of 2/22/2016
in Mrs. Bell's Classroom
Spelling - Words with a Prefix or Suffix
This week's spelling lesson consists of words that have prefixes and suffixes. The cursive page and Google Classroom activities will be collected on Friday, 2/26. The final test for the lesson will also be that day.
Reading - Journeys Unit - The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
We have had many interesting conversations about vocabulary and use of language within the novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Our "Executive Archeologists" will continue to dig into chapters 1-7 of the novel during the week of 2/22. We will also conduct a text pair study of the poem Some People. Look for a QUIZ on using context clues to determine the meaning of vocabulary from chapters 1-2 to be scheduled for the week of 2/29.
This photo is a copy of the Edward Tulane excerpt that we worked on this week in school. I wanted you to see an example of how students annotate text when we close read.
English- Adjectives
Social Studies - The Midwest
Our study of the Midwest will begin with a look at how the Great Lakes were formed, and how they connect the region with the rest of the world. The Badlands of South Dakota will be our focus at the end of the week. The Midwest map QUIZ is scheduled for Tuesday, 2/23.
Science - "How Does Your Body Get Oxygen & Nutrients?"
Cells to Tissues to Organs to Body Systems...this is what we will look at as we begin our study of the Human Body. Below is a video of students conducting an investigation in which we studied the effect of activity on pulse rates. The junior scientists first counted their pulse rates at sitting, after one minute of marching, and finally after one minute of running in place. Be sure to ask your child what he/she learned about the relationship between activity and pulse rate and why it exists.

Mrs. Bell's Math Class - Unit 4 - Multiplication & Division of Whole Numbers & Decimals
The standard algorithm for two-by-two digit multiplication is the topic for the week. Students will not only review the steps of the algorithm but discover WHY it works!
Students know that I am available at recess and before & after school for extra support in math. We call this time "Math Club". I highly encourage all of my math students to come in for a "boost" whenever they feel the need. This is a picture of mathematicians working together to practice multiplication strategies during a Math Club session.

Enjoy the warm weather this weekend!
